Third mission, social involvement and services for the communityAlongside its two fundamental roles of academic teaching and research, the university pursues a third mission which favours the direct application, development and use of knowledge to contribute to the social, cultural and economic development of society. In light of this, each university department is involved in communicating and disseminating knowledge through direct interaction with the local area and community.
We share the fruits of its higher education and research with society at large by organising conferences and seminars and supporting academic cooperation with local, Italian and foreign institutions and companies.
The Department runs a Master II in Tropical Surgery and Humanitary Emergencies which, in collaboration with Doctors Without Borders and the NGO VISPE, organises a one month professional internship in Burundi.
The Department also collaborates with the Evaristo Felice Dall’Abaco Conservatory of Verona in running a musical therapy project, Giunone, for women with breast pathologies.
The General, Oesophagus and Stomach Surgery Unit coordinates Italian Group for the Study of Gastric Cancer (GIRCG), a non-profit organisation dedicated to the dissemination of gastric cancer treatments, which operates closely with the “vivere senza stomaco” [“living without a stomach”] association for gastrectomy patients.
The General and Pancreatic Surgery Unit works together with the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM), the "Together against cancer" foundation and the Italian Association of Cancer Patients (AIMaC) for “PANCREA”, a national awareness campaign on pancreatic cancer.
Together with the National Association of Italian Dentists, the Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry Unit participates every year in Oral Cancer Day in Verona, a day dedicated to the prevention of oral cancer by providing free screening visits in the main squares of Italy.
The Paediatric Unit collaborates with the Italian Society of Paediatrics and the University Hospital of Verona, along with representatives from institutions, schools, media and sport, for International Children’s Day – raising awareness of the importance of physical activity and movement for children’s wellbeing and physical and mental development. Additionally, it cooperates with the Youth Diabetes Association of Verona to organise an information day for the public, addressing topics such as what diabetes is, how to treat it and how to manage family issues.
The Child Neuropsychiatry Unit collaborates with the University Hospital of Verona, the non-profit association ANTS, the company Aptuit and the Ministry of Education’s Regional School Office for Veneto. It presents new findings in science and research and offers opportunities to share good psychological and educational practices for the family, school, rehabilitative interventions and taking responsibility. Such meetings are a chance for the social and healthcare services involved to compare organisation and strategies.
The Urology Unit provides an ‘open’ outpatient service at the Italian League for Fighting Cancer (LILT). It participates in urology prevention month, run by the Italian Society of Urology (SIU), and provides a team of experts to help with “UROLOGO RISPONDE” [“a urologist answers”], a service offered by the Italian Society of Urology for patients with questions about various urologic diseases.
In terms of general surgery and chemotherapy, the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Unit plays an integral role in the Italian Society of Oncological Gynaecology (SIOG)’s educational research. Together with the National Observatory on Women’s Health (ONDA), the Unit helps disseminate knowledge to the public about gynaecological diseases and pregnancy/childbirth.
